Crichton, 25, appeared in Dunedin District Court on Monday charged with assault and was remanded without plea until July 19.
He is scheduled to face trial on three assault charges related to an earlier incident in Dunedin on April 3. He has pleaded not guilty.
The ORFU said Crichton, who has yet to play a first-class game for the union after signing for them late last year, was suspended from today until the outcome of his court appearance on July 25.
"Following a further incident last weekend, and after consulting the New Zealand Rugby Players Association, the ORFU has decided to take this step.
"Daniel will be on full pay and will have access to training facilities and physiotherapy services to assist him with his recovery from a hamstring injury," said ORFU general manager Richard Reid.
"The ORFU has reserved its position, as is the norm, until the outcome of the judicial process is known," he added.
Crichton has previously played for Tasman, Auckland and Counties-Manukau and for New Zealand age-group teams.
