Brewer (46) was sacked by English club Sale this week amid reports senior players were unhappy with his forthright style.
The former All Black and Otago loose forward had only been at Sale eight months, but his coaching record includes stints in Italy and Ireland, as well as with the Scottish national side.
Otago is looking for a forwards coach to join Phil Mooney.
With Mooney being recruited from Australia, the new co-coach will likely have to be a local or have strong Otago links.
And he will need a certain strength of character to join a side in the doldrums.
Brewer seems to fit the bill.
There were rumours last year Brewer was interested in returning to Dunedin to succeed Steve Martin as Otago coach.
Nothing eventuated, but it is not the wildest fantasy to imagine he could be interested in a homecoming, and that officials like Otago deputy chairman Laurie Mains, who wanted Brewer to be his first All Black captain, would be keen to see their hardnosed former son back in town.
Otherwise, the highly-regarded Andy Hunter remains the favourite to get the co-coaching role, with incumbent assistant David Latta also likely to be offered a coaching spot.
