The powerhouse Otago Boys forwards pushed the Waitaki Boys pack into the mud in the first spell to pave the way for a 22-12 win at Littlebourne yesterday.

The win in the annual interschool First XV match toppled Waitaki Boys from its top spot in the Highlanders Zero-Fees secondary schools competition and put Otago Boys in the lead.

The Otago Boys pack put its stamp on the game from the start, with the pack driving forward with the pick and go and dominating the set pieces.

The line-outs were dominated by Otago Boys, 18-7, with lock Joe Latta making six clean takes and No 8 Alex Wright-van Leeuwen four.

Six takes were made off Waitaki throws.

Latta impressed with his ability to make ground on the drive and Wright-van Leeuwen's covering was of a high standard.

The powerhouse front row of Blair Laughton, Ethan Todd and Isaac Gutschlag dominated the scrums.

Hooker Todd had an outstanding game and used his strength to make ground on the drive and with the pick and go.

The other forwards to stand out for Otago Boys were openside flanker Ryan Edgar with his high tackle count and replacement loose forward Saia Vaha'akolo with his bulldozing runs.

Fullback Liam Edwards stood out in the backs with his speed in taking the high ball and his long and accurate punting.

He kicked three goals from four attempts.

Halfback Dan Smart had his best game of the season with his accurate chips over the top that put pressure on the Waitaki defence.

Otago Boys scored two tries in the first 13 minutes to lead 17-0.

The first try, after seven minutes, was the best of the day.

It came when Wright-van Leeuwen won the ball off the Waitaki throw on his own 22m.

Otago Boys attacked up the short side and right wing Mekosua Tanuvose was put in the clear 75m out and scooted up the touch line to score in the corner.

The second try came after a concerted forward drive when wing Poamo Aiiloilo used his strength to burst over for the try.

The third Otago Boys try came just before the break when Vaha'akolo was unstoppable on the burst five metres from the line.

The game was over at this stage but Waitaki Boys refused to give in and fought back strongly to score two tries and win the points battle in the second spell.
