Otago Boys' High School blew Timaru Boys' High School off a boggy Littlebourne in the 78th annual interschool first XV match yesterday.

The Otago Boys' pack gave a powerhouse, clinical and precise display in the 57-5 win.

The dominance started with the first scrum, when the pack pushed Timaru off the ball to gain a tighthead. A try came soon after when lock George Latta won the first of his 10 clean lineout takes, the pack drove to the line and lock Brendan Murdoch scored the try.

It was the first of seven precision first-half tries. The spell ended with Otago Boys' leading 38-5.

Captain Sekonaia Pole led by example with his aggressive running with the ball in hand and his strong tackling around the fringes. He played hooker in the first spell and switched to No 8 in the second.

The other standout forwards were tighthead prop Jermaine Ainsley, with his strong scrummaging, aggression with the ball in hand and bruising defence, and Latta, who was the maestro in the lineout.

The ground was wet, muddy and slippery, but it did not affect the passing accuracy of halfback Matt Ellis. He also mesmerised the defence with a 30m run following a forward drive.

Midfielders Sio Tomkinson and Hemaua Samasoni were able to breach the Timaru defensive line. Tomkinson also landed seven goals from his seven attempts to score 20 points.

Timaru Boys' defence improved in the second spell and restricted Otago Boys' to just three more tries. The visiting school's best players were flanker Simon Duffy, hooker Poasa Seiuli and centre Matt McKenzie.

Otago Boys' High School 57 (Brendan Murdoch, Kereama Eriepa, Tui Katoa, Matt Ellis, Sio Tomkinson, Hemaua Samasoni, Luke Moeke, Nick Scott tries; Tomkinson 6 con, pen, Jackson Mitchell con), Timaru Boys' High School 5 (Callum Fix try). Halftime: Otago Boys' 38-5.
