New Otago signing Daniel Crichton has made an inauspicious start to his career in the South, being arrested by police after an incident in the central city on Sunday morning.

Otago Rugby Football Union general manager Richard Reid said he had been made aware of the incident but was waiting for more information before he decided on any punishment for the player.

Reid said he would be talking to the police and Crichton about the specifics of the incident but it was always disappointing when he heard of incidents like this involving players.

It was too early to say what punishment, if any, would be handed out by the union to Crichton but Otago coaches Phil Mooney and Andy Hunter would have an input into a punishment.

Crichton is believed to have been in an altercation with bar security staff on Sunday morning, and police are considering laying charges.

Crichton (25), a loose forward, has played for Tasman, Auckland and Counties-Manukau over the past four years, as well as spending time playing in Italy. He was signed by Otago late last year, and played his first premier club match on Saturday for Pirates.
