Rugby: Martin to decide on future at the end of the season

Otago coach Steve Martin says any decision he makes on his future will be made at the end of season, and he was focusing on the final three games of the 2009 campaign.

Otago crashed out of contention for the Air New Zealand Cup semifinals with a 38-10 loss to Taranaki on Saturday night.

The side has three games to play, against Waikato, Tasman, and Counties-Manukau, all at Carisbrook.

Martin said his position would be decided at the end of the season, and he did not want to comment on what the future might bring for him.

"My focus is to make sure we do everything we can to finish the season strongly.

I will assess what I'm going to do at the end of the season," Martin said.

Martin is in his fourth year with the side, and his contract is up at the end of the season.

Martin said he, too, was disappointed the side had not won more games but felt people had to look at the bigger picture.

"Of course we would like to have more wins, and for a lot of people winning is the big indication, and it certainly is a major one.

"But we have also set out to develop players that are the future of Otago rugby.

"Some players whom we have been developing have shown they are capable of playing at this level."

Otago has scored three wins this season and has picked up six bonus points.

But it has suffered from inconsistency, having beaten Bay of Plenty a week before falling to Taranaki at a sodden New Plymouth on Saturday night.

It sits 10th on the table, the same position it finished in last year's competition.

Martin said having a team together for a few years was vital in this day and age, and that was something Otago did not have.

"Look at teams like Tasman, Southland, Bay of Plenty.

"They've got a core group of 12 to 13 guys who have been together for two or three years and that experience is vital."

Otago has not had that luxury, with more than 30 players making their debuts in Martin's reign.

Player turnover has been high in Otago, Martin said.

Adam Thomson played No 8 for Otago on Saturday night.

He last played for Otago in that position in 2006, and captain Alando Soakai is the only Otago player still in the side which took the field with Thomson in 2006.

Martin said there was a much better atmosphere within the side this year than last year.

"We've scored more tries than last year but we've just not been able to get more wins.

We've been close, particularly in the first half of the season, and come back well after the disappointment against Hawkes Bay.

"The team has a great desire to be the best they can be as a team.

"Players are really working hard and as coaches that is all we can ask for.

"I'm upset as anyone there are not a few more Ws in that win column."

He declined to comment on whether he had got the best out of the players.

Otago has no major injury concerns going into its game against Waikato on Saturday afternoon.

No 8 Steven Setephano is likely to be available, after missing the match against Taranaki with a shoulder complaint.

Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid had earlier said the coaching positions would be reviewed at the end of the season.
