Rugby: Manawatu still in the playoff hunt

Manawatu have kept their playoff hopes alive in the ITM Cup's Championship division following their 22-16 win over Northland in Palmerston North tonight.

Some opportunistic scoring helped Manawatu on their quest to nab the points over the Taniwha in an error-riddled game that didn't provide a lot of entertainment for the neutral.

Following an early Northland penalty, Manawatu scored the game's first five-pointer when a crooked lineout throw from Rob Foreman found blindside flanker Heiden Bedwell-Curtis who darted 25 metres to score midway through the first half.

It was a nice trick play but how the assistant referee missed the wonky throw-in was more than a head-scratcher.

Northland's reply was equally as lucky when a skewed kick from first-five Daniel Hawkins led to a dodgy bounce and when flanker Dan Pryor snatched the loose ball and offered a deft pass to wing Whiria Meltzer, the No 14 did the rest and blazed down the touchline to score.

Meltzer's strike came right on halftime, which gave the visitors an 11-7 lead heading into the break.

Manawatu pivot Jade Te Rure helped erode the deficit with an early second-half penalty before Bedwell-Curtis completed his brace with a try from close-range in the 63rd minute, which gave the Turbos a lead they would never cough up.

A 75th-minute Lewis Marshall try following some slick handling work in the backline iced the win, although Northland did manage a late score through Derek Carpenter to grab a bonus point.

Manawatu finish their regular season campaign against the high-flying Tasman in Blenheim next Sunday and will likely need to beat them to squeeze in to the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Northland can start making plans for later this month because their season is all but toast despite having home games to come against Otago and Bay of Plenty next week.

Manawatu 22 (Heiden Bedwell-Curtis 2, Lewis Marshall tries; Jade Te Rure pen, 2 con) Northland 16 (Whiria Meltzer, Derek Carpenter tries; Daniel Hawkins 2 pen) Halftime: 7-11
