The Highlanders have choices on the openside flank and will also have more players to fill the second row in their semifinal against the Waratahs on Saturday night.

One thing though is clear - Dan Pryor will not be seen again this season.

Pryor, the abrasive loose forward, was a spectator at yesterday's training with his left arm in a sling after he dislocated his elbow in the torrid win over the Chiefs on Saturday night.

He was felled when his elbow was caught by a flying Chiefs forward in the breakdown in the second half. He left the field immediately and was taken to hospital straight after the game.

It was a nasty-looking injury and incident but the Highlanders have moved on and will have two flanking options for the match against the Waratahs.

Shane Christie, after a season disrupted by a hamstring injury, is available while James Lentjes is also an option.

Christie has not played a single minute for the Highlanders all year, being bothered by a hamstring injury which he picked up in pre-season.

He was all set to play against the Waratahs the first time the teams met back in March, but felt his hamstring twinge in the warm-up and pulled out.

He has had a couple of false starts since and then picked up a nasty gash in his leg while playing club rugby on Saturday.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph said Christie would be considered for selection as he was a quality player and could do the job.

Lentjes had come into the team in the middle of the season and played four games, getting through plenty of work.

John Hardie made it through training yesterday but he was still a week or two away, having injured his rib cartilage in a match against the Blues earlier this month.

Joseph said what had to be balanced up was the ability of the players coming back into consideration, their relative lack of recent match play, and the importance of the match.

Lock Joe Wheeler was also back training yesterday and would also come into selection consideration.

He had not played until April because of a knee injury. Lock Alex Ainley was also struggling with a knee injury but should be available for the weekend. Joe Latta and Mark Reddish were other options in the locking department.

The side had Monday off and had a light run yesterday. It will have today off before training tomorrow when the team will be named.

It will fly to Auckland tomorrow night and spend the night in the city before flying to Sydney on Friday.

Joseph said the travel plan suited the team as it meant less time sitting at an airport waiting around.

The Highlanders played in Sydney last year, losing 44-16.

Meanwhile, South African referee Craig Joubert has been confirmed as the referee for the match.

He will be assisted by Australians James Leckie and Andrew Lees on the sideline and George Ayoub as the television match official.

Glen Jackson will referee the other semifinal between the Hurricanes and Brumbies.
