The Crusaders Knights easily defeated the Fijian Warriors 55-7 at Carisbrook yesterday.

The match, the first round of the New Zealand leg of the Pacific Rugby Cup, was shifted to Carisbrook after the Christchurch earthquake knocked out AMI Stadium and other playing fields around the city.

The relocation did not seem to bother the Knights, a combination of Crusaders squad members, wider training group players and promising players in the region, as they led 31-7 at the break.

Crusaders Knights coach Matt Sexton said the team had experienced plenty of disruptions in the past days and had just one training run.

"But in saying that over half of the guys are part of the Crusaders, with the squad and the wider training group, so they know each other," he said.

"In some ways it was good to have a focus.

"With no work on and no university for a lot of guys this gave them something to do."

The Christchurch-based team was always on top and Fiji struggled in fitness and hanging on to the ball. Fiji scored its try after just 11 minutes but never got close again.

Winger Johnny McNicholl and fullback Sam Monaghan both picked up two tries.

Fiji will play the Chiefs development side next Wednesday in Tauranga before taking on the Hurricanes on March 14 in Porirua.

The Crusaders Knights will face Samoa in Timaru next Wednesday and then Tonga at Lincoln on March 14.

Crusaders Knights 55 (Johnny McNicholl 2, Sam Monaghan 2, Sione Holani, Luke Whitelock, Andrew Olorenshaw, Luke Romano tries; Tom Taylor pen, 4 con, Tyler Bleyendaal 2 con), Fijian Warriors 7 (Ravai Faiaki try, Taniela Maravunawasawasa con). Halftime: Knights 31-7.
