Rugby: Joseph sticks with same winning team

The Chiefs have rung the changes but the Highlanders have stuck with the same starting XV for their first home game at Carisbrook tomorrow night.

The only change to the Highlanders side is in the reserves, where experienced hooker Mahonri Schwalger replaces Brayden Mitchell.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has kept his faith in the side that got the season off to a winning start with a gutsy win over the Hurricanes.

Chiefs coach Ian Foster, though, has not been so kind with his players, making eight changes to his starting XV from last week, with All Blacks Brendon Leonard and Stephen Donald sent to the bench and veteran Tana Umaga disappearing altogether.

Joseph said it would have been hard on any of the players to make changes.

"The guys have done nothing wrong and are coming off a big win. I think with the limited experience we have, we are starting to get a few combinations going, and there are a few guys tired that it would have been a big call to make a change," he said.

He had full faith in first five-eighth and goalkicker Lima Sopoaga, who had an off day with his boot last week in his debut at this level.

"Even Dan Carter had an off day last week.

It happens.

Really, we won the game, the guys played well and we can create some consistency."

Joseph said the team had been buoyed by the support after the win last week and he hoped to get a big crowd to Carisbrook.

He expected a big game from the Chiefs, who will be hurting after losing 28-20 to the Brumbies in Canberra last Saturday night.

"They're be up for a huge game. They'll be hurting after last week and have chosen a quick loose forward trio, so that's shows what sort of game they're going to play."

The side had obviously been affected by the earthquake in Christchurch, with many players having links there.

"It's horrible - really, really horrible. A lot of the guys have relatives there and they are all good, although houses and that are damaged."

Joseph's side has obviously found confidence from its win against the Hurricanes but knows it will face an opponent itching to get on the points table.

The visiting side's backline has been completely changed, with Mike Delany set to start in the No10 jersey, outside youngster Tawera Kerr-Barlow.

Liam Messam moves to the No8 position from the blindside, while Hayden Triggs and Isaac Ross, who played in the middle row for the Highlanders in 2008, will lock the scrum.

Toby Smith replaces Ben May in the front row and hooker Hika Elliot is still injured, so Aled de Malmanche will get the start again.

Former Otago No8 Steven Setephano has been named in the reserves.
