Rugby: Improved Otago Country beaten 35-0

Otago Country made a ''vast improvement'' on last weekend but was comfortably beaten 35-0 by Southland B at Clinton on Saturday afternoon.

The home side went into the match with a better mindset than in its 105 point loss to Otago B last weekend and coach Roger Cotton was far happier with the performance.

''It was a big improvement on last weekend in both application and attitude,'' Cotton said.

''We defended quite strongly. The boys showed a bit of mettle.''

The strong defence could not stop Southland B from crossing the line for five unanswered tries, two of those to lock loose forward Michael McKee.

At 14-0 going into halftime, Otago Country was right in the game but a try right on the hooter meant a 21-0 lead at the break.

Cotton said he was happy with the scoreline but some execution in the second half proved costly.

''We never used the wind very well [but] finished quite strongly,'' he said.

Loose forwards Daniel Hurring and captain Kerrod Baldwin were Otago Country's best players in the match while Arrowtown prop George Ravula got a start and had some good carries.

Sonny Rangitoheriri, Brenton Howden and Matt Johnston were the other try scorers for Southland B and Jackson Wallace kicked all five conversions.

Otago Country's last match of the season is against Canterbury Country at Milton this weekend.
