Otago Spirit's record 85-5 winning score was built off the back of a superior scrum that gained dominance from the start.
The front row of Kat Wilton, Lucy Emery and Pip Love exerted power at the set pieces from the first scrum and this set the platform for Otago's 13-try romp over Hawkes Bay at the North Ground on Saturday.
Otago scored six tries and led 38-0 at the break and added another seven tries in the second spell.
It was Otago's best winning score and winning margin in a national championship match.
A feature of the game was the way the Otago pack kept putting in the hard yards in the tight, even when the scoreboard was mounting.
Hawkes Bay was always going backwards at the scrum and this enabled the rampaging Otago loose forward trio of Angie Sisifa, Kerry Stoddart and Rachel Scott to make ground with the ball in hand.
Otago played sound basic rugby and never flinched from doing the basic work up front before releasing ball to its star-studded backline.
This was highlighted early in the second spell when the forwards drove toward the line and Black Fern Wilton was up in support and crashed over for the try.
It was lock Nicky Crawford who burst upfield with the ball that set up the first of Claire Richardson's two tries after 30 minutes.
The backline was given quick ball by halfback Jenna Aikman who was playing her first game for the province.
The talented midfield of Black Ferns Claire Richardson and Kelly Brazier caused problems and were able to split open the defence with ease.
Richardson's play has matured a lot since she last played for Otago Spirit in 2008.
Her accurate and precision play on defence and attack was a huge help to her side on Saturday.
Brazier impressed with her ability to pounce on the loose ball and race away from defenders. She scored five tries and kicked 10 conversions.
Victoria Nafatali had the strength to break the line but tended to run too far before unloading to her pacy outside backs.
Fullback Hailee Hurring and wing Arna McLeod ran with pace and both scored two tries.
Hawkes Bay's only try was scored by wing Shaylee Tipiwai late in the game but the best Hawkes Bay player was centre Nina Pineaha who tackled her heart out in a bid to stem the Otago tidal wave.
