Tonight's game between the All Blacks and Wales has been billed as the final test at the historic venue. The old lady is being replaced with a roofed stadium in Awatea St.
Forsyth Barr Stadium is still under construction and is reportedly on schedule to be finished in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
You can check progress yourself at the open day from 11am to 2pm today. But Gavin cannot bring herself to visit the new stadium.
"I don't want to. It's too emotional," she said.
Her grandfather, All Black Steve Casey, grew up on Murrayfield St next to Carisbrook and as a mischievous child, would sneak into games.
He went on to play in the 1905 test against Wales in Cardiff. You know the one - All Black centre Bob Deans claimed he scored but was denied by the referee. Wales won 3-0, spoiling the All Blacks' hopes of a Grand Slam.
Gavin has travelled from Sydney with her son Byron Gavin to farewell the 'Brook and watch the All Blacks extract some revenge.
And they have brought with them their most treasured possession - Casey's All Black cap.
"The pull was too strong. I had to be here. My grandfather lived on this street ... he used to climb under the fence and into the game.
"I get choked up just seeing [Carisbrook]. It is wonderful and I'm going to miss the place. I think it is a shame to be honest."
Security is pretty tight around the cap, she said. But it always comes out when there is an All Black match on television and on this trip to New Zealand it has not left their sight.
All Blacks Mils Muliaina, Jerome Kaino and Neemia Tialata were treated to a close look at the artefact yesterday.
Casey, a hooker, played 38 matches for the All Blacks, including eight tests. He also played 57 games for Otago.
Off the field he was known as a colourful character - "a bit of a larrikin" was how Gavin put it.
One story revolves around the whereabouts of the long-lost match ball from the 3-0 loss to Wales in 1905.
Casey is thought to have acquired the ball, deflated it and returned with it to Dunedin.
But the Welsh Rugby Union maintains it has the match ball.
"It is here all right," Gavin said.
"He was known to do that sort of thing. The only thing is there might have been two balls."
