Rugby: Discarded Otago players find new homes

Players discarded by Otago after last year's horror season have spread far and wide and most continue to pick up a pay cheque.

France, Japan and the north of England have all become the new homes for Otago players from last year.

Of the 19 players who appeared for Otago last year and have not been named in the squad this season, only three - Charlie O'Connell, Peter Mirrielees and Blair Young - are still playing club rugby in Otago.

Brad Cameron and Sam Anderson-Heather are also still in Otago but have not been selected for because of injury.

Centre Josh Tatupu, who played every game for Otago last year when it finished last in the ITM Cup, is a classic example of the modern sportsman, who simply has boots and will travel.

He has signed for the Exeter Chiefs in the English premiership, which will be the ninth sporting organisation he will play for in his adult sporting career, despite having to yet blow out 25 candles on his birthday cake.

Tatupu, who said last year he had a desire to play well for Otago and to make the Highlanders, started out playing league in Christchurch.

From there he was signed by the Melbourne Storm, but after three years moved on and played league in France. He subsequently switched to the 15-man game, playing in the Reds academy before going across the country to play for the Force for a couple of seasons.

He then played club rugby in Sydney for a short period, before linking for just one year with Otago.

After an average year in the blue and gold jersey, he moved to Castres, in France, before signing with Exeter.

Lock Hayden Triggs signed for the Chiefs this season and was barely sighted. He has since penned a deal to play for the Honda club in Japan.

Also in Japan are last year's captain Alando Soakai and Otago midfielder Andrew Parata.

First five-eighth Chris Noakes has signed for Bay of Plenty and lock Josh Townsend has moved to Auckland, along with prop Sam Hibbard and hooker Wyatt McKay.

Townsend has been chosen in the Auckland ITM Cup squad.

Collectively, those 19 players who were left out of this year's squad played 345 games for Otago.
