Hard-working Taieri openside flanker Jeremy Corliss received the ODT-Speight's Cup for being named the Dunedin premier rugby player of the year at the awards function at Carisbrook last night.

Corliss (22), in his first season of premier rugby, impressed with his all-round ability.

He was able to break the line with the ball in hand, was a reliable tackler and had the vision to link up with his backline.

He used his strength to break through the defence to score six tries, making him the top try scorer for his team this year.

Corliss, a builder, grew up in Auckland and spent three years in the St Kentigern College First XV.

He played for Auckland secondary school teams in 2004 and 2005 before shifting to Dunedin three years ago.

Corliss made a big contribution to Taieri's return to premier rugby and helped the team to finish strongly in eighth place in the 10-team competition.

Corliss is a keen surfer, like his rugby hero, former Otago and All Black openside Josh Kronfeld.

His uncle, Hayden Corliss, played premier rugby in Auckland and became a professional rugby player in England 15 years ago.

Points were allocated each Saturday by club rugby reporters from the Otago Daily Times and Newstalk ZB.

Corliss won with 24 points and was followed by Jason Kelly (Harbour) and Josh Clark (Pirates) 20, Dane Maraki (Alhambra-Union) 19, Warren Kearney (Pirates) 18, Michael Gurran (Dunedin), Siaosi Folau (Harbour) 17, Jon Crossan (Dunedin), Scott McKee (Dunedin), Eben Joubert (Harbour), Seko Qaraniqio (Kaikorai), Julius Glasson (Southern) 15.

Alhambra-Union winger Karne Hesketh headed the try count with 12 tries and was followed by Siaosi Folau (Harbour) 10, Hamish Johnstone (University A), Marshall Suckling (Pirates) nine, Tumua Ioane (Dunedin), Joe Bradley (Dunedin) eight, David Thompson (University A), Wayne Gibson (Alhambra-Union), Kurt Schruder (Zingari-Richmond) seven.

Glenn Dickson (Pirates) led the individual points scoring with 117 points and was followed by Luke Reihana (Alhambra-Union) 102 and Chris Noakes (University A) 100.

Also acknowledged last night was Erik Vaafusuaga (Taieri), who has played 258 premier games - 210 for Taieri and 48 for Green Island - between 1989 and 2009.

He broke the record of Billy Laing (Dunedin), who played 242 games.

Ed Baker (Dunedin) was the club personality of the year, and Ross Barmett was named referee of the year.

Green Island prop Brent Short reached the milestone of 150 premier games and his brother Jason reached 200 games.
