Rugby: Clubs start on Thursday

The opening round of premier club rugby will begin on separate days this week.

Three games will be played on Thursday, while the other two games will be played on Easter Saturday.

The clubs had the option of playing on any day during Easter.

A few years ago, games were played on Good Friday and that led to complaints, so it was decided to leave it up to the teams to decide when to play.

There have been many seasons when no club rugby has been played at Easter.

On Thursday, Taieri plays Kaikorai at Peter Johnstone Park (4pm), Dunedin plays Zingari-Richmond at Kettle Park (4pm), and Southern plays Green Island at Bathgate Park (4.30pm.

On Saturday, Pirates play Alhambra-Union at Hancock Park at 1pm, while Harbour faces University A at Watson Park at 2.45pm.
