Central Otago claimed the Topp Cup for the first time since 2010 with a convincing win over South Otago in Balclutha on Saturday.

Central held a narrow 11-8 lead at halftime, but poured on the pressure in the second half to win 30-8.

A powerful forward pack coupled with a backline that ran the ball well led to Central posting its emphatic win to claim country rugby bragging rights.

Central captain Ben Purvis was delighted his side was able to bring the Topp Cup back.''

It was all about playing for the whole of the Central clubs, really - about having a bit of pride in the jersey,'' Purvis said.''

It's good to get it back and show a bit of pride in it.''

The Central forwards were well led by former All Black hooker Andrew Hore, who claimed six tightheads in the game and was at his brilliant best.''

We were quite physical and took it to them in the forwards,'' Purvis said.''

Having Horey in there sort of helped us a bit.''

Blindside flanker Henry Youngman was another to impress in the pack.

The Wakatipu captain made a number of crucial breaks in the second half that set up scoring opportunities and a try of his own.

In the backs, fullback Purvis was outstanding, and scored a brilliant try which changed the game early in the second half when the score was still 11 8 to Central.

Alexandra right winger Rory Campbell was another to have a strong game. He made several breaks by getting on the outside of his opposite and scored 15 points from a try and four successful kicks.

Purvis put the win down to his side's defence and being able to put multiple phases together which allowed Central to get the ball wide.

No8 Simon Grant, lock Kerrod Baldwin and second five eighth Todd Wells were the pick of the South Otago players.
