Otago Country club rugby supremacy will be found this afternoon when South Otago champion Lawrence plays unbeaten Central Otago champion Maniototo.

It looks too close to call as the two teams line up for the last game of club rugby in the regions, with both boasting remarkable records and a number of key players.

Maniototo went through 15 matches unbeaten this season, its closest match coming by way of a 15-15 draw with Arrowtown.

The Central Otago final last Saturday also proved a close encounter between the sides, with only a Charlie Hore dropped goal in the final minute the difference.

Maniototo has scored 467 points for the season, with winger Willie Clouston racking up 75 of those thanks to 15 tries, and Hore managing 162 points, most coming through his boot.

Lawrence, the defending Otago Country champion, boasts an equally impressive record, losing just one match in the Southern Region competition.

Including its last two games, a 28-13 loss to Green Island and a 36-17 win over Zingari-Richmond in the town/country competition, Lawrence has amassed 564 points, with 16-year-old centre Sam Wyber scoring 16 tries. First five-eighth Sam Young is the side's top scorer with 129 points.

A number of key players will take the field but arguably the two most influential will face off in the No 10 jersey, Hore for Maniototo and Young for Lawrence.

Both five-eighths have an abundance of experience that has led each to higher honours. Hore is a former Otago player and Highlander, and Young once plied his trade in Taranaki and was also part of the wider squad for Otago last season.

Others to look out for will be midfielders Mitchell Lake (Maniototo) and Lex Kaleca (Lawrence). Both are hard runners and take no backward steps.

Loose forward Ryan Dowling and prop Tim O'Neill will also be vital to Maniototo's chances, while winger Sonny Vakaruru, lock Mark Homer and openside flanker Dave Kenny should feature for Lawrence.

Maniototo relies on hard, physical play up front along with Hore's smart kicking, while Lawrence tends to adopt an offensive mentality.

Rain predicted for later today might keep things close once the final kicks off.
