One former Otago front-rower is about to start playing overseas while another one is returning home, although he will not be taking the field again.

Prop Halani Aulika, who has been released from his Otago contract has signed for the Leeds Carnegie side in the United Kingdom.

Former Otago and All Black hooker Tom Willis, though, has hung up the boots for good, after a thumb injury ended his career.

Aulika has been signed until the end of the season as the Leeds side chases promotion back to the premiership.

Aulika (28) was named in the Highlanders last year but did not make the cut for this season's squad. He had a clause in his Otago contract that allowed him to negotiate with overseas clubs if he did not make a Super 15 side.

Aulika played 14 games for Otago and made three appearances for Tonga at last year's Rugby World Cup.

Willis (32) has been playing at the Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales for the past three years.

His father, Eion Willis, said that Tom had been intending to retire at the end of the northern hemisphere season but a thumb injury had forced him to call an end to his rugby playing days earlier.

He had fractured the thumb last year and did it again this season and was given medical advice that if the thumb was injured again, it could be permanently damaged.

Willis had played 43 games for Otago from 1999 to 2003, and 23 games for the Highlanders, when he left to play for Waikato.

He then played 26 games for Waikato and 39 games for the Chiefs before heading overseas in 2008.

Willis played two games and five tests for the All Blacks in 2001-02, and captained the All Blacks against Ireland A when he made his debut for the national side.

Eion Willis said his son intended to return to Dunedin in April with his partner and baby daughter, Lola, and hoped to find a job in the city making use of his law degree.
