Rubgy: Callon appointed to the board

Former Otago loose forward Dave Callon has been appointed an Otago Rugby Football Union board member.

Callon (51) takes over from Steve Thompson, who resigned because of work pressures in July.

Callon will be an independent member of the board, and his membership was confirmed at a board meeting last night.

An insurance adviser with The Highland Group, Callon said he was passionate about Otago rugby and wanted to contribute to the game in the province.

"I've played for Otago and I've followed Otago rugby and I'm keen to contribute to something that is dear to my heart," Callon said.

He felt getting on to the board was one way to do this.

Callon played 55 games for Otago from 1981 to 1987, and is a long-standing member of the Pirates club. He was the president of the Pirates club in 2007-08.

Married to Clare Mathus with a daughter, Brooke (6), Callon also played bowls for the Kaikorai club.

Callon was born in Dunedin but moved to Timaru in his school years, before moving back to Dunedin.

He played all his club rugby for Pirates, where his two brothers and father played.

Board chairman Ron Palenski said he had known Callon for a long time and was well aware of what he had done for Otago over the years.

He would be a good acquisition for the board.

The New Zealand Rugby Union is still going through the process of naming a new board member for the revamped Highlanders board, while the Dunedin City Council has yet to name its representative for the board.
