Pirates aiming for premier return

The Pirates club is making attempts to get a team back in the premier club competition.

It is contacting players and talking to other supporters with an eye of getting back on the park in 2021 in the premier grade.

The club was forced to pull out of the premier metropolitan club competition in 2017 due to a lack of players.

That forced a bye into the competition with nine teams playing in the grade.

Pirates fielded only one women’s team last season and no men’s teams. It hoped to have a premier two side last season but was not able to get enough players.

Pirates committee member and former club president Daniel Johnson said club members were working hard and players had committed to play for the club if it had a team.

But he said he was not going to make any promises about anything to anyone as nothing had yet been confirmed.

He was waiting to hear back from the metropolitan council of clubs on what was needed from the club to get a side back in the premier ranks.

No coaches had been confirmed as, again, the first step was to get confirmation the club would be able to have a team.

Though it would be good to eliminate the bye, many clubs will be worried players may leave their clubs to play for Pirates.

Johnson said he looked at that matter from the other side as many clubs were quick to raid the stocks of Pirates to fill their teams.

He said the club was in good heart, with money in the bank, good grounds and an active sports hub with softball using Hancock Park and club facilities in the summer, and Caversham Football Club sharing grounds and clubrooms with the rugby club in winter.

The club also had a very strong junior base, he said.

Clubs are usually only allowed back into the premier grade if they have another team in the open grade.

Metropolitan council of rugby clubs chairman Paul Dwyer said the council was just working through the processes and regulations around any return of Pirates to the premier ranks.
