The side chalked up just its second win in the city of Sails in 42 years when it beat Auckland 31-26 after it was behind 19-17 at the break.
The win on Friday night was one to savour for the team, its first win over a Premiership team this season, and the victory has gone a long way to making the semifinals.
It was the first loss by Auckland this season, which had previously looked as though it was powering to the premiership title.
The win also meant Otago retained the Lin Colling Memorial Trophy which was a first for the union.
Otago had beaten Auckland in 2011 when it won 32-25 with Glenn Dickson helping himself to 22 points, scoring a try, conversion and five penalties.
But most of the time a trip to Auckland has ended in a defeat.
It won in 1976, when Otago managed to get home 26-16 over Auckland.
But from then until 2011 it played 21 games in Auckland and lost the lot.
Some of them are hard to forget. The 1988 Ranfurly Shield challenge when Otago went so close to winning, alongside the 1993 national provincial final and the national provincial final in 1995.
Before the 1976 win, Otago had last won at Eden Park in 1949, when the vast majority of top players were away on national duty
The win on Friday night was also the first time since 1975-76 when it had beaten Auckland two years in a row.
It had a memorable victory over Auckland last year at Forsyth Barr Stadium, putting together a huge defensive effort to win 34-26.
Much is made of the strength of the Otago side in the 1990s and it did have a strong team. But in that decade it played Auckland eight times at Eden Park and lost the lot.
