Promotion chance for Otago

Otago is planning another raid on Hamilton.

A couple of weeks ago, Otago returned with the Ranfurly Shield after mounting a successful challenge.

This Friday it will be back at FMG Stadium hoping to win the Mitre 10 Cup championship trophy, and with it promotion to the top tier premiership.

Kick off is at 7.35pm.

Otago coach Ben Herring has hinted at scaling back the training this week; his side faces a third big game in two weeks.

Otago first five-eighth Josh Ioane kicked a late penalty to help his side defeat Hawke’s Bay 20-19 in the semifinal at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night, while Waikato brushed Northland aside 48-26 in Hamilton.

Auckland will host Canterbury in the premiership final on Saturday at 4.05pm at Eden Park after it beat Wellington 38-17 in the semifinal at home on Saturday.

Canterbury prevailed 21-16 against Tasman in Nelson on Friday night.

Auckland Rugby has rewarded its fans with free entry to the final.

In Heartland Rugby, Thames Valley upset Wanganui 17-7 to reach the Meads Cup final.

Thames Valley will travel to Timaru to play South Canterbury, which convincingly beat King Country 58-21 in the other semifinal.

In the Lochore Cup playoffs, Wairarapa Bush beat North Otago 30-21 to make the final.

Horowhenua Kapiti, who beat Mid Canterbury 34-24 in Levin, will host the final.
