The side will take on Northland in Whangarei tonight and then faces Wellington four days later in the capital.
Otago coach Cory Brown said the option was to return to Dunedin tomorrow and then have to return to Wellington on Saturday for the game the following day.
But with it taking basically a whole day to get from Whangarei to Dunedin tomorrow, there would just be one whole day in Dunedin before the team had to get back on a plane on Saturday and fly north.
So team management decided to just stay in the North Island in the time in between games.
The side would stay in Whangarei for a couple of nights and do some training before travelling down to Wellington on Friday.
A few years ago Otago did the same thing when it had two games close together in the North Island.
The side stayed in a school hostel to keep costs down.
This time, the team will be staying in motel accommodation in both Whangarei and Wellington.
Some players, such as midfield backs Sio Tomkinson and Tei Walden and flanker Dillon Hunt, who will miss tonight's game against Northland because of injury may fly to Wellington for the game while other players head home.
