There is not a lot of Otago presence in the All Blacks these days.

But there could be a southern man in a vital behind-the-scenes role in the next World Cup cycle.

Highlanders manager Paul McLaughlan is reportedly being lined up to take the role of All Blacks manager under incoming coach Scott Robertson.

The former police officer, widely known as "Moose", was set to be one of two new faces to fill the very large shoes of Darren Shand, stepping down as manager after 20 seasons, Stuff reported yesterday.

Former New Zealand basketballer Megan Compain was to run the commercial side of the All Blacks, and McLaughlan was to handle the traditional management duties.

McLaughlan could not be reached for comment yesterday.

He already has experience of the international arena, having served as Wallabies manager under both Dave Rennie and Eddie Jones.

McLaughlan has been Highlanders manager since 2015, and previously served five years with the New Zealand under-20 team and several seasons with Otago NPC and age group teams.

The major Otago link in the All Blacks management for the past 18 years has been popular physio Pete Gallagher.
