Otago Boys’ teams had mixed results in round four of the Southern Schools Rugby Championship at the weekend.
The First XV edged Wakatipu 17-7 in a tight contest in Queenstown and remain unbeaten.
Kahu Turoa, Mack Wrigley and Manaia Lesa scored first half tries for Otago Boys. who led 17-0 at the break.
But Wakatipu rallied with a try to Angus O’Neill which Xavier Small converted.
The visitors held on despite copping two yellow cards.
They have four wins from four games. Their remaining game in the opening round is against John McGlashan, who beat the Otago Boys’ Seconds at home.
The loss means Otago Boys’ Seconds will drop out of the first division.
They still have one game remaining in the top tier, but they cannot rescue enough points to avoid automatic relegation.
Southland Boys’ will play King’s in Invercargill on Wednesday in the other division 1 game in round four.
South Otago had a huge win against Taieri in the blue division and have secured top billing in the group with a game to go.
They beat Taieri 92-0 at Toko Domain.
King’s Seconds eased to a 29-5 win against Māruawai-Menzies in Dunedin and St Kevin’s beat Cromwell 33-24 in Cromwell.
The maroon division is still in the balance.
Dunstan beat Waitaki Boys’ 27-7 in Alexandra, but both teams are on 14 competition points and still have an opportunity to finish top.
Southland Boys’ Seconds beat Mt Aspiring 22-13 in Invercargill and can still win the group as well. They have a game in hand.
The winners of the blue and maroon pool will play a final and the winner will gain automatic promotion to division 1.
In the other round four maroon division game, Central Southland powered to a 76-7 win against John McGlashan Seconds.
