Otago have beaten Southland 17-14 in their first pre-season hit out in Gore before the Mitre 10 Cup.
A late attack on the blue and golds’ try line threatened to turn the match in its dying minutes, but Otago’s defence held solid until the final whistle.
Though the Otago side showed some signs of rust, with handling errors stymieing their attack throughout the game, their effort pleased coach Cory Brown.
"These guys have only been together for the week,’’ he said.
"There were some really good performances out there.’'
