But on Wednesday night she is Private Miles — a grunt in the New Zealand Army Reserve Force.
It is a lot of fun until you find yourself digging a trench with a compact spade — the ones that fold down to the size of a ruler so you can slip them in your pack.
Even that was kind of fun for the 20-year-old.
She did her training last summer and now does one night a week with the Reserves.
"I was at a loss as to what I might want to do once I graduate," she said.
"I talked to my careers adviser and she suggested I might be suited to some kind of community service work and suggested I look at the Territorial Force.
"And I knew a couple of girls who had done it and thought why not. It was a new challenge and I thought what else am I going to do with my summer pretty much."
While the rest of us were at the beach, she was digging in with said spade. And, yes, it did take as long as you might imagine.
Miles is in her final semester of a bachelor of science majoring in psychology and minoring in sports and exercise sciences.
Her rugby commitments put a lot more pressure on her time table as well. Balancing it all is an art.
"It is quite difficult and I definitely have made mistakes and double-booked myself. I work part-time for Unipol as well.
"But I like being busy and having all these different facets in my life, and I wouldn’t want to get rid of any of them."
Hopefully, she has not booked in any clients today because she will be busy at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
The Spirit is hosting Tasman. Miles hails from Nelson and has previously played for Tasman and has some friends on the team.
She will not play like she has friends in the team, though.
The power-packed openside has always flourished in open games where the ball is spun from one side of the field to the other. She is extremely fit. But this year she has been working on carrying the ball and has made some devastating runs.
Miles has been instrumental in the Spirit’s unbeaten run in the Championship this season. The team has strung three impressive wins together.
Tasman had a loss first-up to Northland, but has won its past two games.
Otago will start as favourite, though.
The Spirit will be without veteran lock Julia Gorinski and No8 Kristi Kerr, but the team is otherwise at full strength.
The side had an exhausting trip to New Plymouth last weekend. It had to bus to Christchurch, fly to Wellington and bus to New Plymouth.
It took all day. But that did provide an opportunity for some games of Mafia on the bus where the players tried to boss each other.
Now they will try to boss Tasman and extend their lead at the top of the standings.
