But this one will not be about safaris and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.
Kearney, New Zealand Rugby southern region women's development officer, is heading to Africa next year for three months as part of a Bhubesi Pride Charitable Foundation project.
The foundation was set up in 2011 with the intention of getting into local communities in Africa to support rugby and aid development in schools.
Kearney first heard of the project when he was overseas a few years ago and had kept an eye out for it since.
He applied and was picked as one of the 10 coaches from all parts of the globe who will be part of the project next year.
He will be part of camps in Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, starting in April.
Kearney said he enjoyed the game and wanted to spread the positives of the sport to those who had yet to experience it.
``You can learn the game, which is great but to me, it is also about other stuff around the game. About playing as a team, the leadership you have to show, working together as a team,'' he said.
``The sort of stuff that Kiwi kids take for granted we can hopefully teach the kids and coaches over there. Just talking about the challenge and the reward you can get from the game.''
Kearney (32) will spend the second half of the six months of the foundation's project working in the countries.
He will spend one week in each community, coaching the sport for four days. A tournament is set for the fifth day. Up to 600 children will be involved in the tournaments on the final day.
With about 1400km to 1600km between each community, Kearney will have plenty of time for sightseeing on the bus.
He said it was an amazing opportunity to get to share his skills and knowledge with communities which did not normally enjoy a rugby experience.
Bhubesi Pride was founded by former African resident Richard Bennett, who moved to the United Kingdom when he was 14.
He has maintained a strong link with the continent and the first trip was undertaken in 2011.
Kearney is funding the trip himself and needs to raise $10,000 which goes towards the charity and to cover his costs.
Kearney is a former New Zealand curler and is holding curling tournaments to raise funds.
A tournament is planned for Dunedin on June 19 while other tournaments are planned in Dunedin again and on July 19 also in Naseby.
Kearney is also planning raffle nights in Ranfurly in June and has other fundraising ventures.
