Improved perfomance, Herring says

"I thought it was a really good improvement," came the diplomatic response.

Not exactly a glowing endorsement from Otago coach Ben Herring. But it was not a ticking off either.

His side retained the Ranfurly Shield with a 49-14 win against North Otago in Oamaru yesterday.

The final margin blew out a little. The home side certainly had some good patches.

But ultimately Otago's set pieces were too strong and it had to much class out wide for the Old Golds.

"We ironed out a few kinks," Herring said.

"As a coach you always look for how you could improve. There is still a number of things we can do better.

"But I guess if you look at this as normal pre-season then there has been enough improvement, which is pretty satisfactory."

Otago was never in danger of losing the match which is more than can be said for its limp 41-21 win against Thames Valley in Wanaka earlier this month.

North Otago co-coach Jason Forrest was a lot more upbeat about his side's effort.

"Outstanding. We've only been together five weeks and that was our first game together," Forrest said.

"I'm proud of the boys. I couldn't have asked for more. They emptied their tank and that is all you can ask for on a day like this."

There were areas where he would take his side to task, though. He felt the option taking was not always where it needed to be under pressure.

"We did not execute the things we'd been training but that was just the line speed from Otago."

Forrest said it was a great initiative by the Otago Rugby Football Union to take the Shield to Oamaru.

Otago loose forward Sione Misiloi picked up a knee injury during the match.

Herring said he was unsure how bad the injury was but said it took a lot for Misiloi to leave the field.
