This is (sort of) the 10th time the All Blacks will play Fiji. Hayden Meikle reflects on the previous clashes ahead of the test at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night.

1974 New Zealand XV 14, Fiji 13

The All Blacks had played a test against the Wallabies in Sydney three days earlier, and while nine of the players backed up in Suva, this was not given test status. North Otago great Ian Hurst and wingers Beegee Williams and Grant Batty scored the tries.

Two more non-tests, the first in Suva and the second at Eden Park. The first is best known, by Otago fans, for the appearance at hooker of local stalwart Ken Bloxham.

Fullback Kieran Crowley scored 27 points in Suva for the tourists, who played four games in 10 days in the islands.

1987 All Blacks 74, Fiji 13

At last, a test. This was the All Blacks’ second game at the inaugural Rugby World Cup. Fiji had just upset the Pumas but was no match for a talented home side at Lancaster Park.

Outside backs Craig Green and John Gallagher each scored four tries, equalling the record at the time, and 74 points was also an All Black record, surpassing the 70 they scored against Italy five days earlier.

1997 All Blacks 71, Fiji 5

North Harbour Stadium became New Zealand’s 13th test venue.

Taine Randell and Anton Oliver made their test debuts, and Jeff Wilson completed a great night for Otago when he scored five tries.

The Wellington test was slotted in as a sort of fundraiser for the Fijian union. Future Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger started at first five, and Otago flanker Sam Harding played his one and only test. The great Christian Cullen scored a hat trick.

2005 All Blacks 91, Fiji 0

Another blowout at Albany. This was a taster for the much-anticipated opening test of the Lions tour.

Otago lock James Ryan made his debut, as did Fijian-born winger Sitiveni Sivivatu, the latter scoring four tries.

2011 All Blacks 60, Fiji 14

The last test at Carisbrook, which had hosted its ‘‘last’’ test the previous year but was dusted off for an earthquake appeal game for Christchurch.

Jimmy Cowan and Colin Slade formed an all-Highlanders inside back combination.

Highlanders lock Jarrad Hoeata made his debut.
