The days of tired, cramped bodies getting off the plane in South Africa and taking a week to get back up to speed appear to be a thing of the past.

It is all masks, cushy seats and getting sleep at the right time.

Highlanders assistant coach Scott McLeod said the players were in the best condition in which they had ever been in South Africa and that had come through experiences built up over the years.

''We have learnt over the years and the good thing with us is we share all the knowledge from all the other Super Rugby teams and the All Blacks too,'' he said.

''The medical staff and our trainer are pretty happy in the way we have travelled over here. They believe it is the best we have ever travelled.''

''There are a couple of innovations we have used which we believe have really helped.''

Many of the players, seated in business class, wore a device called a humidiflyer on the long flight to the republic.

The humidiflyer was worn over the nose and mouth. It trapped the moisture from breath which is then used to humidfy the air. Invented about a dozen years ago by an Air New Zealand flight attendant, it was said to prevent dehydration and jet lag.

The All Blacks have been using them for a few years and believe there are benefits for the players.

McLeod also said management kept a tight watch on sleep patterns.

The team would watch out for the amount of energy used at the gym so players did not exert themselves too much in the first couple of days upon arrival.

Small increments would be done at every gym session as players did not want to load up too much.

McLeod said every little bit helped but playing at high altitude, which the side would do this weekend against the Bulls, was still a factor.

''But what we are trying to do is minimise it as much as we can.''
