Injury-free Evans appreciating time on the paddock

Highlanders loose forward Gareth Evans is not sure where he will be next year but is just happy getting on the field at last.

Evans (25) was one of the standout players for the side in its win against the British and Irish Lions last month.

He has had a disruptive past couple of years, breaking his arm and injuring his knee, but this year has had more time on the paddock.

Evans said the period away made him appreciate the time he was able to play, including the game against the Crusaders.

``I've had some pretty bad injuries over the last couple of years. Broke my arm in 2015, did my collarbone in 2016 and my knee last year,'' he said.

``I didn't get on the field a lot. It is awesome to get the body fit and be among friends again.

``Everyone is looking forward to taking on the Reds in the final dress rehearsal this week before we get back into the quarterfinals.''

He does not have a preference about which team to play in the quarterfinals - the Highlanders will head to either Christchurch or South Africa.

``Not really. I don't think we will know until Sunday morning. It will be great wherever you go. It will be a challenge wherever you go.''

The former Napier Boys' High School pupil spent the break after the Lions match having a bit of down time in Central Otago and then getting some jobs done around the house.

Now, though, the projects are on the backburner and it is time to do some work on the paddock.

His performances over the past few games have pushed former All Black Elliot Dixon to the bench.

Evans said he was still working through what he was up to next year. Originally from Hawkes Bay, there have been whispers he is heading to the Hurricanes, who are losing flanker Callum Gibbins to Glasgow.

``I've not decided yet. I've got to finish this year and see where we end up.

``But you do look ahead. I've had a couple of injuries over the past few years, so just figuring out what I am up to. Just looking at putting the best foot forward and getting back to the 2015 winning way.

``If we do it, it's going to be like 2015, winning away from home, unless seven plays eight. I'm not sure that has ever happened.''
