Highlandes chief executive Roger Clark is confident star winger Waisake Naholo will remain with the franchise if he stays in New Zealand next season.

The All Black flyer has been linked to a move to the Chiefs and is reported to be weighing up the move seriously.

He is off contract with New Zealand Rugby at the end of the season and the queue to sign the speedster must be rather lengthy.

The 26-year-old is one of the best finishers in world rugby and he has attained almost cult-like status since joining the Highlanders in 2015.

He was preferred ahead of the powerful Julian Savea for the second test against the Lions and shapes as a player NZR will be desperate to retain, as well.

''From my perspective, I expect him to stay in New Zealand. And if he stays in New Zealand, I'd be very surprised if he wasn't with the Highlanders,'' Clark said.

''Hopefully, we will be able to tidy that up in the next few weeks and then we will all know and we won't have to make any more speculation.''

Naholo was reported in The New Zealand Herald as saying family was a draw in a potential move to the Chiefs. His partner lives in Cambridge and he has a brother in Hastings and another in New Plymouth.

''I'd like to stay in New Zealand for at least one more year and go from there.'' Naholo told the Herald.

''If I come up to the Chiefs, I'll be closer to them and being close to family is important for my rugby career. It helps a lot with many things, but all this time I've been by myself, so I don't mind.

''I'm weighing things up at the moment and will hopefully come up with a decision in a few more weeks and see where I go from there.

''I love playing for the Landers and the environment with the boys down there makes me enjoy my rugby.

''At the end of the day it's about where I'll play my best rugby and the Landers have contributed a lot and helped me get to where I am today. It's going to be hard making this decision.''

Naholo has been named in the Highlanders starting side for its match against the Reds at Forsyth Barr Stadium tomorrow night.

Lock Tom Franklin was named Highlanders forward of the year and defender of the year at the franchise's awards earlier this week.

Loose forward Luke Whitelock got the players' player award, while utility Marty Banks picked up the back of the year and fans' player of the year award.

All Black halfback Aaron Smith was named MVP.
