Highlanders preparing to avoid 'lapses'

Someone has to be the first to lose to an Australian team. It is a tag no-one will want, though.

New Zealand sides have shown their strength in the first two rounds of Super Rugby Trans-Tasman.

Playing Australian teams for the first time in more than a year, the New Zealand teams have won all 10 of the matches so far.

It begs the questions when the first Australian win will come, which team will get it and which New Zealand team will be beaten.

Certainly, it is something that may begin to weigh on the players’ minds.

Highlanders first five-eighth Mitch Hunt admitted it brought an element of pressure.

However, he said it was up to the team to ensure it prepared well and did not let itself have "lapses".

"Potentially, yeah," he said of the pressure.

"But so long as we’re focusing on our stuff as a group, our preparation is genuine.

"We’ve seen as a group when we get that stuff right we’ve beaten the Crusaders and the Blues.

"It’s about not having those lapses or taking those games lightly.

"If we stay true to ourselves and our game, we’ve already shown we can beat anyone.

"So there’s no excuses for not getting that stuff right."

Hunt, who has re-signed with the Highlanders through to 2023, is enjoying playing the Australian sides again.

He said the travel had been refreshing, despite the 18-hour trip to get to Perth.

Despite that, he felt the side had coped well and had been pleased with the performance it put on to beat the Force 25-15.

While it was something of a return to the old normal, there was also an element new to it as well.

The Australian franchises remained the same, but the teams had a very different look to them, which he also dubbed as "refreshing".

"You’ve been a couple of years out of playing those guys and, to be fair, there’s only a couple of faces you recognise.

"There’s a lot of younger guys there now in the Aussie set-up and people you don’t know.

"Even in terms of previewing the groups you don’t know a lot of these guys, you’re trying to work out how these guys play, the style of the Aussie teams.

"You’re not quite sure what the intensity’s going to be like on the field until you get our there."
