Highlanders happy with hotel life

Highlanders first five Mitch Hunt reckons he is "pants" at ping pong.

But he has packed enough shirts, and having a view of the lake makes up for the rather limited entertainment options.

Life in the Super Rugby Pacific bubble in Queenstown is not all bad.

"We’re stuck in a wee hotel together, which is great," he said.

"It is sort of like the old tours we had to South Africa.

"There is a little bit less freedom in what you do out and about. But the guys are gelling great. We’ve got a team [recreational room] set up. There’s some games around.

"We’re actually on the lakefront. We’ve had a few swims after training, so we’ve been able to get down there and freshen up."

Yeah, that partial nakedness has caused a few issues among the locals.

The Highlanders received a lighthearted letter of complaint last week.

Productivity had dipped alarmingly at the office across the road on the account of a parade of buff, shirtless men strolling past the windows.

There do not appear to be any plans to cover up, either.

"I think the boys have wound it up a little bit further now. Maybe there are a few extra tops off," Hunt suggested.

Highlanders assistant coach Clarke Dermody has quickly adjusted to life in the bubble as well.

"You can’t beat it," he said.

"Buffet meals three times a day and washing done two or three times a week. It is going well."

There is a job to do, though, and Hunt’s match-up with former Highlander Josh Ioane will form an interesting sub-plot for the season-opener against the Chiefs in Queenstown on Saturday.

Dermody reckons the switch looks as if it has been good for Ioane.

"He looks like he has changed. He has gone up there and he looks really fit," Dermody said.

"It was good to see him get a run in the weekend and we are looking forward to playing him.

"Obviously, the boys know him really well and he knows our structures."

Hunt agreed with Dermody’s assessment.

“He looked really [good] at the back end of the NPC and the games we’ve seen him in the last few weeks.

“It’ll be good to get out there and battle with him.

"I know he’ll be pretty pumped to play the Highlanders in his first game.”

Highlanders loose forward James Lentjes took a knock to his neck last week but has trained this week and is expected to be available for the opener.

Fullback Sam Gilbert skipped the game of three halves on Saturday due to a bad back but has recovered.

Loose forward Christian Lio-Willie, covering for Billy Harmon, has been replaced in the squad by lock Fabian Holland after fracturing a bone in his hand late last week.

Southland outside back Rory van Vugt has injured his wrist and will also be replaced.
