Semifinals sorted after Green Is sneak through

Green Island has snuck into the semifinals courtesy of a late intercept try to Isaak Te Hiwi.

Dunedin arguably had the better of the match at Miller Park this afternoon. But with the score locked 24-24, Te Hiwi pounced with the match-winner much to the delight of the home fans.

The outside back knocked over the conversion to seal a 31-24 win and clinch Green Island's first semifinal appearance since 2002.

Two years ago the team had to survive a promotion-relegation match with West Taieri, so it is a remarkable turnaround for the club.

Taieri nabbed top billing with a 17-15 win against an understrength University side at the University of Otago Oval.

Kaikorai thrashed Zingari-Richmond 74-24 at Montecillo but missed a spot in the semifinals.

In the other game, Southern beat Alhambra-Union 40-33 at Bathgate Park. Alhambra-Union picked up two bonus points and avoided the wooden spoon. That dubious honour goes to Zingari-Richmond.

Taieri will host Green Island in one semifinal, with University at home to Harbour, who had a bye this week, in the other.
