Lively No 8 Adam Hill played a key role in Kaikorai's 21-12 win over University A at Bishopscourt.
He was aggressive off the back and able to break the advantage line.
The Kaikorai forwards dominated the mauls and pushed the students back in the scrums in the first spell. Hill used his strength to score a try off the back after the Kaikorai pack took a tighthead from a 5m scrum.
Prop Jim Stevenson gave Kaikorai dominance in the scrums and Rob Griffiths was a hard-working hooker.
The Kaikorai backs played attacking rugby in the first spell and fullback Tony Ensor was dangerous when entering the line.
Kaikorai led 10-5 at the break but the students closed the gap during their period of control in the first 20 minutes of the second spell.
Lock Rob Verbakel was aggressive on the drive and strong in the lineout. No 8 Paul Grant made ground with the ball in hand.
Strong-tackling Kaikorai centre Ben Atiga shut down the student attacks and flanker Jamie Williams was effective at the breakdown.
Kaikorai regained control for the last 15 minutes and shut out the students by kicking for field position.
