Delay in opening far from disaster

The grand opening will have to wait a couple of weeks.

Upper Clutha Rugby Football Club had hoped to unveil its renovated clubrooms tomorrow.

The project cost $860,000 and was set to start making its first returns.

The defending champion is hosting the Cromwell Goats in what shapes as a compelling game.

All Black great Brian Lochore had been teed up to help launch the flash new facilities.

It was all very exciting and then bureaucracy pulled off a fumble with the line seemingly clear.

The certificate of public use did not come through in time.

But as it turns out, it has worked out rather well. Lochore was not going to be able to make it due to an unplanned medical procedure.

He had opened the clubrooms in 1983, so it would have been a shame for him to miss the occasion. But he will not miss the event after all.

The opening, council willing, will go ahead in two weeks when Upper Clutha hosts Maniototo.

Senior club captain Nathan Simon said "everybody had been working around the clock to make it happen".

"It is just red tape. But we are not too worried about it.

"With Sir Brian not being able to make it, there were a few stars aligning for us anyway. We wanted to put it off until he could do it for us.

"The fact we can get him to do it again for us is just nostalgic and resonates well, doesn't it?"

The beer may have been warm anyway. A part for the chiller had been delayed and will not arrive until Wednesday.

"These things happen. We've got no rugby Queen's Birthday weekend, so now we've got two weeks."

Upper Clutha has about 250 junior players and 45 registered senior players. The old clubrooms were dated and too small to serve the club.

With the new facilities unable to be used this weekend, the game against Cromwell will be shifted to Tarras.

The side usually plays at Tarras once a year but will have a second trip to the small settlement after playing there earlier this month.
