Valley remains unbeaten at top

For the first time this month, all six Citizens Shield teams played on the same day.

After a few weeks of disruptions, three games were held across North Otago on Saturday.

A big second-half performance from Valley kept its unbeaten run alive as it took down Excelsior 35-17 in a top-of-the-table clash.

Defending champion Kurow got back on track with a 36-24 win over Athletic Marist, and Maheno put on a dominant display in a 57-26 win over Old Boys.

It was fiery encounter between the top two sides in the competition with two yellow cards being given out in the opening 20 minutes.

Blues were able to build a strong lead through the ever-reliable boot of Josh Phipps. He slotted four first-half penalties to help his side take a 12-0 lead into the sheds.

Despite dominating possession and territory, Valley just could not crack the Blues’ defence.

That all changed in the second half, however.

The Weston club side was the first to score after the break through Sam Sturgess following a strong lineout drive.

Blues were able to hit back with a try of their own as Metuisela Lapa burrowed his way over on a pick and go.

From there, it was one-way traffic as Valley ran in 28 unanswered points, including one penalty try, to scamper home with the win.

The Valley forward pack once again proved it was the best in the competition with big shifts from Sturgess and Cameron Rowland.

Tarras Beardsmore was also a physical and direct ball carrier in the midfield.

Elsewhere, Maheno claimed an emphatic win over Old Boys.

The country side came bursting out the gates to open up a 23-point lead at halftime.

The second half was much of the same as the green and blacks ran in nine total tries.

In the final game of the round, Kurow defeated Athletic Marist at home.

The Red Devils will be hoping their win can turn their season around as they push to make the top four.
