Otago and Kaikorai prop Jonah Aoina is one of 11 newcomers named in the Manu Samoa side for its game against the Maori All Blacks in Wellington this evening.

Aoina, who will start from the bench, will be joined by a couple of familiar faces in the line-up. Former Highlanders tighthead Kalolo Tuiloma and back-up Highlanders outside back Neria Fomai have made the starting XV.

Manu Samoa is coached by former Highlander and Otago player Vaovasamanaia Seilala Mapusua.

Mapusua said the two tests against the Maori All Blacks were crucial preparation for next month's Rugby World Cup qualifiers against Tonga.

‘‘If we can show glimpses or be able to see how we want to play the game firstly and being able to execute that in the extreme pressure from the Maoris, which we're anticipating,’’ he said.

‘‘I think that's what success will look like, if we can see glimpses of that throughout the game and also get our boys to come out of the game having a better understanding of the guy next to him and getting those connections a bit stronger.’’

Aoina, who is from the Samoan village of Toamua, arrived in Dunedin in 2013 and attended Otago Boys’ High School.

He scored 18 tries for the First XV the following year, including five in one game. He has gone on to play 27 games for Otago.

Tuiloma will be making his international debut as well, while Fomai, who has played sevens for Samoa, will also be making his debut alongside Losi Filipo and Tomasi Alosio .

Counties Manukau lock Samuel Slade and No 8 Olajuwon Noa are the other new faces in the forward pack.

Former New Zealand under-20s hooker JP Sauni is also set to make his first test appearance off the bench, alongside Samoa-based duo Theo McFarland and Elisapeta Alofipo.

Veteran flanker Jack Lam will captain Samoa for the game, as new skipper Michael Alaalatoa has been named in the reserves.

Wellington was moved into Covid-19 Alert Level 2 earlier this week so the game at Sky Stadium will be played behind closed gates. — Additional reporting RNZ
