Who's worried about the ABs?

There must be  sleepless nights at the Hansen household at the moment. Many of the first-choice All Blacks are sitting on the sideline. Rugby writer Steve Hepburn  checks out the team which played Ireland in Dublin last year — the side’s last serious game — and whether it is a case of doom and despair or just a minor bump on the road.

Fullback
Ben Smith: Smith has sprained his left ankle and the cotton wool call from the higher powers came out very quickly. Sure there is Jordie Barrett, but he has barely started shaving while Damian McKenzie is seen more as a five-eighth. Worry level: like finding the last seat on a United Airlines flight. Should be fine but you never know.

Right winger
Israel Dagg: Dagg barely got under way and hurt a knee. Is expected back in a couple of weeks. Waisake Naholo is around but his body is made of glass. Nehe Milner-Skudder looks like a no-go zone. Worry level: a grey hair or two.

Centre
Malakai Fekitoa: has been a mixed bag. Defending well but what is going on with those hands? Does he not wipe his hands after buttering the toast in the morning? Worry level: an irritating itch in that hard-to-reach part of your back.

Second five-eighth
Anton Lienert-Brown: steady as ever and there is Sonny Bill Williams, Ryan Crotty and Charlie Ngatai coming into the picture. Worry level: Zilch.

Left winger
Julian Savea: has he peaked too soon? Does not usually get interested until mid year but been good right from the first game so far this year. Worry level: That fly that comes into the room when Mike Hosking comes on the box.

First five-eighth
Beauden Barrett: best player in the world and carving up at will. Worry level: nothing, zero, ah, let's not talk about goalkicking.

Halfback
Aaron Smith: appears to be coming nicely into form. His speed and pass is vital to the All Blacks. Worry level: Disprin has been taken and the headache is slowly, slowly disappearing.

No 8
Kieran Read: could it be worse? Played a few minutes against some lowly opposition then goes and breaks a thumb. Worry level: like inviting Kim Jong-un to the local bonfire and he can bring his own fireworks.

Openside flanker
Sam Cane: has had another worrying head knock. But able back-up in Ardie Savea and Matt Todd. Worry level: barely a second thought.

Blindside flanker
Liam Squire: got over a knee injury and abrasive as ever. Jerome Kaino looks doubtful but must have a good game in him as he has done nothing for the Blues. Worry level: a furrowed brow.

Lock
Sam Whitelock: been outstanding and leading by example. Worry level: sweet as.

Brodie Retallick: see above

Prop
Owen Franks: has come out of the blocks and looks like a young colt just coming out of the maiden stakes. Worry level: yeah, nah.

Joe Moody: really, does anyone know what Joe Moody does? Is he not the same as a dozen other looseheads? Ever reliable Wyatt Crockett is right there to help out. Worry level: like getting drowned in the Dead Sea.

Hooker
Dane Coles: this is serious. Last sighted when Edgecumbe was above water. A niggly calf which is taking a long time to heal. Worry level: On the Titanic with Leonardo nowhere in sight.
