Masters Games: Three more world records for octogenarian

Marinus Boon added three more indoor rowing world records to his tally at the South Island Masters Games in Timaru on Saturday.

Boon (80), a retired builder, set records in the men's aged 80 to 84 grade in the 100m (18.3sec), 500m (1min 40.6sec) and 1000m (3min 50.7sec) on his way to winning three gold medals.

What gave him most satisfaction was to finish with faster times than men who were 10 years his junior.

"I'm quite content with my performances," Boon said.

"I felt positive from the start, but I will keep striving to row faster."

He gets his next chance of breaking his own world records at the New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui next February.

Boon has now broken nine world records in ultra-masters events.

The old record in the 100m of 20sec was set by Alex Fergus (New Zealand) in 2005.

The other two records were achieved by former Empire Games athletics medallist Cliff Taylor (Auckland) at the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin last February.

His 500m time was 1min 56.3sec and the 1000m 4min 12.7sec.

Taylor, who was known as Noel in his running days, set his records at the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin early this year.

He won a bronze medal in the six mile at the Empire Games in Auckland in 1950 when Otago's Harold Nelson won the gold medal.

Taylor also won five New Zealand senior athletics titles - the six mile in 1950 and 1952 and the cross-country in 1948, 1949 and 1952.
