Racing: Wealth Princess favourite for Telegraph

Wealth Princess has retained favouritism for the $1 million Telegraph Handicap at Trentham on Saturday after drawing 10 in the 17-horse field.

Darci Brahma (2007) and Gee I Jane (2006) have won the Telegraph from barrier 10 in the last decade.

David Walsh, who has ridden Wealth Princess in her five wins from as many starts, has retained the ride.

Walsh has won the Telegraph on Tanalyse (1986) and Courier Bay (1987-88).

"She is as good as she has ever been but it is her first trip away from home," Brent Gillovic, the Hamilton trainer of Wealth Princess, said.

The 4yr-old mare has not raced since winning the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

She was due to leave Hamilton at 11pm yesterday on the road trip to Wellington with race rivals A Gold Trail and Vonusti.

Wealth Princess is at $5 with the TAB in final-field betting, ahead of Mufhasa ($7), winner of the Telegraph Handicap last year.

Courier Bay is the last winner of the race in successive years.

Wall Street was scratched at Awapuni last Saturday in favour of a Telegraph start.

The Jeff Lynds-trained 5yr-old has not raced since he won the Coupland's Mile at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November.

He is unbeaten in four starts this season.

San Luis, the sire of Wealth Princess, was put down in 2007 due to laminitis.

He commenced stud duty at Highview Stud, Hamilton, in 2002 after winning the group one Manawatu Sires' Stakes and finishing second to Master Belt in the Two Thousand Guineas from 12 starts at 2 and 3.

The son of Flying Spur is also represented at Trentham on Saturday by Eel Win (Anniversary Handicap) and Imabayboy (Wellington Stakes).

Eel Win won the Timaru and Kurow Cups last month.

Imabayboy has won his last two starts, at Rotorua and New Plymouth,
