Racing: Trotting mission accomplished

It was mission accomplished when Guadeloupe trounced his rivals at Gore yesterday.

Guadeloupe made the trip from the Burnham stable of Mark Jones to race for a lowly $3276 stake ($2100 for first) as a win was virtually penalty free.

Guadeloupe had won at a Tuesday meeting at Oamaru at his first start in May last year.

"Two wins at Tuesday meetings are treated as one win in discretionary handicaps because of the low stakes," Darrin Williams, the handicapper for Harness Racing New Zealand, said.

Guadeloupe was trained for his first win by Kuri Bush part-owner Colin Harvey.

The Monarchy gelding has since won three races from the Jones stable. He was driven yesterday for the first time by the stable junior reinsman, Regan Todd. He took the 6yr-old to Gore by trailer float on Monday and returned to Burnham soon after the race. It was the only drive of the day for Todd.

Guadeloupe had collected a winning stake of $5423 for a win at Orari at his previous start.

• Norham Fella is now trained by Owen Gillies and Derek Balle at Pukekohe. The winner of four races from the Invercargill stable of Gil Shirley, Norham Fella has been leased by Gillies.

• North Taieri trainer Martin Denton qualified the 3yr-old trotter Phelps at Rangiora yesterday. Phelps, who was 7.4sec inside the required time, is a gelding by Pegasus Spur from Simone Roydon, the dam of Roydon Flash (11 wins) and Sierra Roydon (8 wins).
