Troia has added to a long line of winners for Makarewa breeder Vin Nally stemming from a job he undertook 47 years ago.

Troia quit maiden ranks at Forbury Park on Thursday night at her fourth start.

She is a 4yr-old mare by Elsu from Millennium's First, by Soky's Atom from Vindaloo by Noodlum from Litmus.

Nally was an apprentice carpenter in 1964 when he built stallion boxes in his spare time for the Ascot Stud being established by Gil Shirley and Graham (Curly) Thomas on the outskirts of Invercargill.

"I took up the offer of a service to Blue and the loan of a mare [Shirleen] for doing the job and bred my first horse at the age of 17," Nally recalled.

Blue had run a mile in a record 2.09.2 as a yearling in 1957. The son of Local Light Blue Revue, trained by Allan Holmes, was unbeaten in six starts as a 2yr-old and won the New Zealand Derby and ran fourth in the Auckland Cup at 3.

The unraced Shirleen (Colossal-April Hall), a sister to Whirlwind, who won as a pacer and trotter, had then had two foals, the oldest a 2yr-old.

The result of her mating with Blue was Litmus.

She (Litmus) broke a leg and Paddy Dunne (veterinarian) saved her for stud, Nally said.

Nally and Ted McDowell began breeding from Litmus and her second foal, Super Chance, won as a 3yr-old at Wyndham in 1973 at his first start. Super Chance was trained and driven by Henry Skinner, who died on Monday.

Super Chance was by Majestic Chance, who put Ascot Stud on the map as the leading New Zealand sire in the 1981-82 season. Majestic Chance sired the New Zealand Cup winners Lunar Chance (1975) and Bonnie's Chance (1982).

Litmus also left the winners Paper Chance and Denim to Majestic Chance.

Vindaloo, the granddam of Troia, was among 11 foals left by Litmus. Vindaloo did not race and she in turn left Millennium's First.

"She [Millennium's's First] was the first foal in the world born in the new century. She was born at 12.20am on January 1, 2000," Nally said.

Millennium's First won a race at Addington for Nally in 2004 when trained by Mark Purdon. Troia is her second foal.

• A protest was dismissed in unusual circumstances at Forbury Park on Thursday night. Stipendiary stewards protested on the grounds the horse started from the incorrect barrier position because he had started in front of the mobile gate.

I'm A Dazzler, who drew the outside of the front line, was about a neck in front of the mobile arm when the field was dispatched. The starter gave evidence that he believed the horse had started from its correct barrier position. This was supported by the connections of the horse.

The representatives of the Judicial Control Authority, Geoff Hall and Dave Steel, did not finally determine whether the horse had started from an incorrect barrier position as they were able to dismiss the protest on the ground that even if I'm A Dazzler had started from the incorrect position, he had not gained an advantage.

I'm A Dazzler was eased immediately after the start and, after racing three and four wide for the first 700m, the horse worked to the lead. The stipendiary stewards did not allege that the horse had started on a mark in advance of its proper mark as mark is defined in the rules as a handicap mark and the race, which I'm A Dazzler went on to win by over a length, was from a mobile start.
