Racing: Top priced lot of $70,000 at SI sale

A colt by Pentire from Aimee's Idol fetched top price of $70,000 at the South Island sale of 2yr-olds in Christchurch yesterday.

The colt, the second foal of his stakes-winning dam, was bought by Paul Moroney Bloodstock, of Victoria, when offered by Curraghmore Stud, Hamilton at the sale conducted by New Zealand Bloodstock.

Pear Tree Farm, Waimate, received $56,000 for a Danroad-Snow Reason colt bought by NZB, Auckland. Snow Reason has left five winners including Realign.

NZB paid $52,000 for a Faltaat-Ally McBeal colt offered by Grangewillam Stud, Wanganui. The colt is a half-brother to American Apparel.

White Robe Lodge, North Taieri, sold seven of the progeny of Yamanin Vital for a total of $169,500, an average of $24,214.

The top price was $37,500 paid by Wanganui trainer Kevin Myers for a colt out of Vaguely Famous, the dam of three winners including Euphonic Kid (Hong Kong). Myers also bought a colt out of Megagem for $34,000.

A colt out of Ears Carol went to Victoria for $30,000.

The progeny are the last main crop of Yamanin Vital, who died in October 2009.

White Robe sold a total of 11 lots yesterday for an aggregate of $226,000, an average of $20,545. It was the top average for vendors with three or more horses at the sale.

Courtco Racing, operated by Broadfields trainer Brian Court, paid $38,000 for a Pentire-Danlife colt.

There were 136 2yr-olds offered, compared with 187 last year. There were 96 sold yesterday for an aggregate of $1,261,350 and an average of $13,139. The aggregate last year was $1,523,200 and an average of $11,994 for 127 sold.

The Berkley Stud at Greenpark, operated by Edwina Morris and Alan Jones, had the largest offering yesterday. They sold 19 2yr-olds for $268,750, an average of $14,145. They entered 28 horses for the sale.

• Jimmy Cappie, the Southland lightweight jockey, who rode 267 winners in the 1950s and 60s, died in Invercargill on Thursday. He was 81.

Cappie served his apprenticeship with the late Bill Hazlett at Invercargill and rode his first winner, Black Light, at Cromwell in 1946.

He was a natural lightweight and won the 1953 Riverton Cup on Dusty Miller carrying 7st 1lb (45kg).
