Racing: Success at Addington with first starter there

Alta Tearaway gave Pukekohe trainer Mark Burley a win with the first horse he has raced at Addington when the 3yr-old was successful yesterday.

Alta Tearaway, who was having his first start, overcame a second-line draw.

"He is down here to qualify for the Sires' Stakes," Burley said.

"We decided to make the trip after a workout at Pukekohe was canned a couple of weeks ago"

Alta Tearaway is quartered at the Woodend Beach stable of David and Catherine Butt.

David drove the Western Terror-One Cookie Left colt yesterday.

The first heat of the Sires' Stakes is at Addington on September 30.

Burley and his wife, Heather (Birdie), race Alta Tearaway, a $6000 purchase at the 2010 Australasian Classic yearling sale.

Mark Burley is the former jockey Mark Colson, who served his apprenticeship with Bruce McLeod and Maurice Campbell.

He has held a training licence for seven years. Meander With Earl is his best winner. The Burleys bought Meander With Earl after she had won two races. The trotting mare went amiss last year after four more wins and she is due to foal to Love You.

Mrs Burley raced Dillon Dean, winner of the 1989 NZ Free-For-All when trained by her former husband Don Dwyer. Dillon Dean ran second to Inky Lord in the New Zealand Cup three days earlier.

Mrs Burley's father, Keith, raced Dillon Dale, winner of the 1984 New Zealand Free-For-All when trained by driven by Dwyer.

Dillon Dale ran third to Camelot and Our Mana in the New Zealand Cup. Dillon Dean and Dillon Dale were both by Gaines Minbar out of the Gentry mare Birdie.

• Steven Golding (20) drove his first winner yesterday. He combined with Morty, trained by his West Melton employers Peter and Leone Jones. Golding, who was licensed to drive in races last season, was having his 43rd drive.

• Craig White, who took over the training and lease of November Rain eight days earlier, won with the 5yr-old mare yesterday.

She won by 14 lengths. She had three minor placings in 22 earlier starts over two years.

• Sovereignty is down to resume racing at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The Sean McCaffrey-trained Sovereignty, who has not raced since finishing fourth in the Rowe Cup in May, is off 50m over 2700m. He won from a 50m handicap at Alexandra Park in October.

Katchafillie has been scratched at Addington on Friday night following her win there yesterday.

Idle Maple had her fourth win in nine Australia starts at Menangle yesterday. She was sold out of the Templeton stable of Tim Trathen in July after one win in 31 starts.

Run Ripalong, the former Central Otago-owned and trained pacer, won in 1.55.2.

• The North American stallion Misterizi was found dead in his stall at Roydon Lodge Stud, Weedons, yesterday.

An autopsy showed he ruptured his stomach, the stud manager, Greg Crawford, said.

The 8yr-old Misterizi. owned by Paul Montgomery, of Queensland, had been at the stud two weeks and had not served a mare.

The 2008 Nat Ray winner was retired after an injury to a hind leg. when in work with Tim Butt at West Melton. He was imported from the United States six weeks ago.

The North American pacer Lisagain arrived at the Butt stable yesterday. The $US600,000 earner with a mile record of 1.49.4 will be aimed at major races in New Zealand and Australia. Lisagain is a half-brother by Dragon Again to champion pacer Lis Mara (by Cambest), who stands at Nevele R stud.

The Butts won the Interdominion Pacing Final and Hunter Cup in 2009 with former North American pacer Mr Feelgood.
