"I will look at the 3yr-old race at the Riccarton Labour Day weekend meeting now," John Parsons, the co-trainer of Santos, said.
Santos came from last in a 12-horse field and some 10 lengths from the lead at the 600m to win by two lengths over 1600m.
A 3yr-old by No Excuse Needed from Carinda, Santos is raced by Mossburn breeder Bev Jones.
Santos is a half-brother to O'Cartier (by May Halo), the winner of 13 races, including the Stewards' Handicap (dead-heat) at Riccarton, Higgins Stakes at Awapuni, Lightning Stakes at Trentham and an open 1400m at Te Rapa.
O'Cartier is also raced by Jones from the Parsons stable.
O'Cartier is due to resume in the Ashburton Cup (1200m) at Ashburton tomorrow.
The stable apprentice Tina Comignaghi will claim 4kg for O'Cartier.
O'Cartier won a trial at Rangiora on July 27 with Comignaghi the rider.
"He [O'Cartier] has been slow to lose his coat but he has done pretty well," Parsons said.
The stable also won yesterday with Alpine Heights, who had not raced for six months.
Alpine Heights, who won twice as a 3yr-old last season and was placed behind Time Keeper and St Germaine over 1600m at Trentham in March, could make his mark over middle distances this season.
Alpine Heights won over 1600m yesterday.
"I think he is better over 2000m and I think he has strengthened a bit," Parsons said.
Alpine Heights is by Spartacus and the first foal of Alpine Delight, who won the Invercargill Cup twice for the Parsons stable.
Alpine Heights is raced by Alexandra breeder Peter Lyon, who raced Alpine Delight.
• Trainer Michael Pitman will race Draconic out of his class at his next start in a bid to qualify for the $250,000 Coupland's Bakeries Mile at Riccarton on November 10.
Draconic recorded his third win in seven starts when he mastered 58kg in a rating 75 1400m race yesterday.
"I will do something I have never done before and race him way out of his class in the Coupland's Bakeries Mile Trial at Riccarton at his next start," Pitman said.
"The only reason is that a win would guarantee him a start in the Coupland's Mile."
Pitman has held a high opinion of Draconic and said the gelding would rise to another level when tried in blinkers.
"I have just resisted putting blinkers on him to give him more time to mature."
Minqar Qaim is on target for the Coupland's Mile after a win in the open 1400m.
Danish Ruler, who won the rating 85 2200m, has the North Canterbury Cup as his next assignment.
• Ron Chalkin, of Dunedin, had a win with the first horse he has raced when Anzac Star cleared maiden ranks.
Anzac Star had finished second in his other start as a 2yr-old at Wingatui in May.
Anzac Star is trained by Paul Richards, who bred the son of Seasoned Star and Solo Star with his wife, Leeanne.
Chalkin bought the gelding 12 months ago.
• Shankar Muniandy was suspended for careless riding after his win on Outlaw Queen.
He shifted in over the closing stages, tightening Selenus, Whodunnit and Aristocrat.
He was suspended from Monday until October 31 inclusive.
