Grant Crabbe, a Broadfields motor mechanic, has tuned the trotting cast-off Shoe In.

The 5yr-old gelding had his third win for Crabbe at Rangiora on Saturday from 12 starts over the past four and a-half months.

Crabbe took over the ownership of Shoe In in March.

"I got him [Shoe In] from Kevin Townley.

John Hay had finished with him and Kevin gave him a couple of trials and he went nasty," Crabbe said.

"Kevin told me to be careful with him as he was dangerous.

He was going to be used as a hack or put down before I got him."

Shoe In resumed in March after 13 months away from racing.

Shoe In won a maiden trot at Omakau in January 2009 for Hay, who bred and raced the gelding with the Shoeshine syndicate.

The 5yr-old Shoe In began racing two years earlier and he was having his 11th start.

He had one further unplaced start for Hay.

Crabbe said he had not experienced any problems with Shoe In, the only older horse he has in work.

"It may have something to do with being in a small stable.

I have just tried to keep him quiet.

I think the problem was in his head."

Crabbe said Shoe In had gained confidence.

Shoe In is by Continentalman and the first foal of Shoeshine, a Sundon mare who had two minor placings in seven starts.

She is a half-sister to Hazel Maud (six wins).

They are out of Country Fashion, who won four races for Hay.

Country Fashion was a half-sister to Elgin Princess (six wins) and Lord Elgin (three).

Crabbe has held a training licence for 12 seasons since 1991-92.

He had his first success with Smooth Rock in 2000.

She won two races as a 3yr-old.

He won two races with Stronsay as a 5yr-old in 2002 after the gelding had been tried by other trainers without success.

Stronsay was then sold to the United States.

Crabbe raced Lady Juniper with Long Bush trainer Alan Paisley.

She won them four races before she was sold in 2006.

• Winston ran his last 800m in 57.7 and the final 400m in 28.7 when he won a workout at Ashburton yesterday.

The Live or Die 4yr-old, trained and driven by Leo O'Reilly, ran the 2400m in 3.08.5.

Winston won his first two trials but is unplaced in three race-day starts.

No No Yankee, who was sidelined after good form as a 3yr-old, won a workout from a 40m handicap at Addington on Monday.

"He will need a few more runs at trials but it was pretty encouraging," Anthony Butt, his driver, said. The son of Muscles Yankee and Inda Bank won by six lengths in 3.39.9 for 2600m.

No No Yankee was injured in the 2008 New Zealand Trotting Derby after winning three of his five starts in lead-up races.

"He never got a go in the Derby and fractured a knee.

We got him back and he went sore in a hind leg."

Stablemate Cullen's Creek continued to please when he finished half a head second to Bruce Almighty from a 30m handicap over 2600m on Monday.

Cullen's Creek had to be eased after he won the Central Otago Trotting Cup at Omakau in January.

He developed swelling in a hind leg.

He may resume in the Kurow Cup at Oamaru on August 8. The 3yr-old Bruce Almighty was spelled in March after a win from nine starts for Colin and Julie De Filippi.

The champion trotter Stig has gone sore again in a ligament and he has been put aside by Tim Butt.

The winner of 15 of his 31 starts and now rising 8, Stig has not raced since he won the City Of Sails Free-For-All at Alexandra Park in March 2009.

Kotare Yaakov, an unraced rising 3yr-old in the Mark Purdon-Grant Payne stable, won his workout by five lengths on Monday in a 2.05.5 mile rate for 1950m (mobile).

Kotare Yaakov is by Falcon Seelster and the first foal of Kotare Yoyo, a half-sister by Presidential Ball to Kotare Mach.
